Hunger Walk & 5K Run Update

Melanie O’Donnell of Hunger Network reports,

A huge THANK YOU to everyone on the team and committee for planning and executing an amazing Walk for Hunger this year!

The final count was 896 people registered, and we raised over $80,000 toward Hunger Network’s mission of feeding our communities’future.

We have received overwhelmingly positive feedback about the event, and the donations are still coming in!

The Hunger Warriors Team has raised $6558 of its $15,000 goal.

Mary & Chico’s special give-a-way table with Ducks for Your Darlings, Flower Pens, Candy, Stuffed Animals, Airplanes, Animal Magnets, Bookmarks, Thrivent Note Books & Thrivent Generosity Shirts was a huge hit.

Remember – The Walk/Run for Hunger is the major source of summer funds for the Hunger Network, including 70+ food pantries and hot meal sites for over 40,000 people served monthly in Cuyahoga County.

Donations may also be sent to Hunger Network.

Needed: Drivers – Hunger Network Food Rescue Heroes

Our goal is to rescue perfectly viable food that is destined for our waste stream and get it into the hands of those who are hungry in our community. Together, we can reduce food waste and fight hunger!

We rely on amazing people, like you, to be our feet on the ground to rescue and deliver food to hunger centers in less than an hour. Rescues can be weekly, scheduled food rescues or pop-up food rescues.

Weekly Rescues

Weekly rescues occur on the day, time, and frequency of your choice (i.e. every Monday at 10:00AM). These types of rescues allow you to build relationships with our food donors and food recipients during your recurring rescues, making you their favorite food rescue friend!

Pop-Up Rescues

Pop-up rescues occur on an as needed basis. These are not at pre-determined days and times and you can choose to claim or ignore the rescue.

Hunger Netowrk Food Rescue Hero app

Prevent good food from entering the waste stream and redirect it to people who most need it!
The simplest directions follow:

  1. Download the Hunger Network Food Rescue Hero app Available on iOS or Android, the Food Rescue app navigates volunteers from donation pick-up to drop-off.
  2. Claim a rescue and pick up a food donation. Rescues are available on a one-time or weekly basis and take less than an hour. Our volunteers are on the ground making our work happen!
  3. Rescue food and deliver to a local nonprofit. Our nonprofit partners get food directly to those who need it most. Each donation makes an impact!

We are in need of volunteers now more than ever! Don’t let good food go to waste – become a Food Rescue Hero!

Hunger Network Food Rescue app is available only on the App Store for iPhone. Realize that 40% of food goes to waste, while 1 in 6 people face hunger. It’s not that we don’t make enough food, it’s that good food is ending up in landfills. Food rescue heroes become a powerful part in the solution. In as little as 30 minutes of your time, you can rescue perfectly good food from going to waste and deliver it to nonprofits who serve those who are food insecure. Connect to your existing social media accounts to sign up to be a food rescue hero.

Set your preferences on when and where you can do food rescues. Get alerts when rescues become available. Opt in to rescues that fit your schedule. Rescue every day, every week or just give it a try.

Food rescue heroes get information on where to pick up the food and where to drop it off—we guide you every step of the way. The app gives you information about the work of the nonprofit you are delivering to. And because you drop off directly to the organization that will distribute the food, you see the impact you have made on hunger.

Take a selfie with your rescue and share on social media to spread the word about Hunger Network Food Rescue and inspire your friends to be food rescue heroes!
