The Story Of The First Thanksgiving

The story of the “first Thanksgiving” meal between the Wampanoag Indians and Pilgrims was a harvest feast in peace in 1621. Much of the food was provided by the Wampanoag guests, with their leader Massasoit, the Pawtuxet interpreter and guide Squanto, and Massasoit’s son Metacom. Massasoit had established peaceful relations with the colonists that lasted for decades.

Historically, on October 3, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln declared a National Day of Thanksgiving to be celebrated on the last Thursday in November 1863. This custom became an annual event with a Congressional joint resolution in 1941 and President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s proclamation in 1942 designating the fourth Thursday in November as Thanksgiving Day.

Since 1927, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City with huge balloons has delighted millions of spectators. On this Thanksgiving Day, Mary & Chico are thanking God for St. Paul Lutheran Church, School, and Friends’ Servant Faithfulness in Blessing SPL Hunger Warriors with gifts of time, talents, and treasures.
